Bangladeshi Students Win Gold at WICE 2025 for RiverGuard Innovation

Bangladesh’s young innovators have added another glorious chapter to their achievements on the international stage. ‘Team RiverGuard’, comprising four tenth-grade students from Dhaka Residential Model College (DRMC), has brought honor to the nation by winning a gold medal at the 7th World Invention Competition and Exhibition (WICE) 2025 held in Malaysia.

At the competition hosted by SEGi University & Colleges, Malaysia, Team RiverGuard emerged as champions in the Innovative Social Science category while also receiving the prestigious MIICA Special Award. This special recognition, presented by the Malaysia Innovation Invention Creativity Association (MIICA), acknowledges the team’s innovative work.

Technology for River Conservation

Under the leadership of team leader Arannya Abir Khan Prapya, Team RiverGuard presented their project “RiverGuard – Illegal Sand Extraction Detection System for Bangladesh Rivers.” This is a low-cost technological solution capable of detecting illegal sand extraction activities from river beds.

Uncontrolled and illegal sand extraction from Bangladesh’s rivers is a severe environmental problem. It causes multiple issues, including reduced river navigability, riverbank erosion, damage to aquatic ecosystems, and weakening of bridge and culvert foundations. Experts believe that Team RiverGuard’s innovation will serve as an effective and affordable technology to combat this problem.

Team Members and Their Contribution

Team RiverGuard members are:

  • Team Leader: Arannya Abir Khan Prapya
  • Members: Sabrin Mahmud Ethan, Abrar Sadiq Raha, and Mohammad Tawsif Ahnaf

All four members are studying in the tenth grade, and their success proves that with proper guidance and dedication, the young generation can hold Bangladesh’s flag high on the global stage.

Bangladesh on the Global Stage

The World Invention Competition and Exhibition (WICE) is one of the world’s premier innovation competitions, where inventors and researchers from various countries participate. Such success by Bangladeshi secondary-level students in this competition is a shining testament to the country’s education system and the creativity of its youth.

This achievement is a source of pride not only for Dhaka Residential Model College but for all of Bangladesh. Team RiverGuard’s success will serve as inspiration for other young innovators in the country and demonstrate how the proper application of technology can bring about change in environmental protection and solving social problems.

Future Plans

The ‘RiverGuard’ project now awaits implementation. The team hopes that with cooperation at governmental and non-governmental levels, this technology can make a real contribution to protecting Bangladesh’s rivers. Such innovative solutions to prevent illegal sand extraction will open new horizons in conserving the country’s rivers and environment.

Congratulations to Team RiverGuard on their outstanding achievement, and we wish them the best for even greater success in the future. Their journey will remain a beacon of light for Bangladesh’s young generation.
