The screen says “Seen,” but there’s no reply. You know the other person is awake. You also know that whatever started tonight’s fight was small. Still, neither of you is willing to say “sorry” first.

Sound familiar? Then this piece is for you.

The Problem Isn’t the Fight. It’s How You Fight.

Most of us grew up believing that fighting is bad. A relationship with no arguments is supposed to be the ideal one. But psychology research tells a different story.

Dr. John Gottman of the Gottman Institute in the United States has spent more than four decades studying thousands of couples. His most striking finding: whether a relationship lasts doesn’t depend on whether the couple argues. It depends on how they argue. In many cases, he could predict whether a couple would stay together just by watching the first few minutes of a disagreement.

In other words, conflict itself doesn’t break relationships. Contempt, disrespect, and silence do.

Gottman’s “Four Horsemen”: Habits That Poison a Relationship

Gottman identified four behaviors as the most damaging to relationships. He named them the “Four Horsemen.”

1. Criticism: “You were late” and “You’re always late, you have no sense of responsibility” are not the same thing. The first is a complaint about a behavior. The second is an attack on the person’s character.

2. Contempt: Eye-rolling, sarcasm, mockery. According to Gottman, this is the single strongest predictor of a breakup, because at its root is the attitude of “I’m better than you.”

3. Defensiveness: “It’s not my fault, you’re the one who…” In trying to protect ourselves, we stop listening, and the real problem stays exactly where it was.

4. Stonewalling: Shutting down, walking out, refusing to respond. The person who wanted to talk concludes that their words don’t matter.

Ask yourself: in your last argument, which one did you do? There’s no shame in it. Almost all of us do at least one. The real work begins with recognizing it.

6 Strategies to Turn Conflict Into Strength

1. Calm yourself first

When we’re angry, the brain shifts into “fight or flight” mode. Gottman’s research found that once the heart rate climbs past roughly 100 beats per minute, people can no longer think rationally. He calls this “flooding.”

What should you do? Say, “I’m really angry right now. Can we talk in 20 minutes?” Then actually step away. Walk, drink some water, breathe deeply. But coming back is essential. A break is not the same as running away.

2. Start with “I,” not “you

Say “You never value me,” and the other person raises a shield. Say “When I don’t hear back for a long time, I feel neglected,” and there’s room for them to lower it.

The formula is simple: “When ___ happens, I feel ___, because ___.”

You’re sharing a feeling, not passing a verdict.

3. Begin gently

Gottman found that a conversation usually ends the way it begins. A harsh opening almost guarantees a fight. So instead of attacking, try: “There’s something I’d like to talk about. I want to work it out together.”

4. Stop trying to win

This is hard, but it matters most. In a relationship, there is no “winning” an argument. If you win on logic but the other person is hurt and goes quiet, you’ve actually lost.

Ask yourself: “Do I want to be proven right, or do I want to keep this relationship right?”

5. Learn to truly listen

Listening isn’t rehearsing your reply. It’s trying to understand. Repeat back what you heard in your own words: “So you’re saying you feel exhausted because you’re handling everything alone. Did I get that right?”

Psychologists call this “reflective listening.” Doing it alone can defuse half the tension, because what people want most is to feel understood.

6. Make repair attempts

Another of Gottman’s major discoveries is the “repair attempt”: a small effort in the middle of a fight to lower the temperature. For example:

– “Let’s take a pause.”

– “I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

– “I think I understand what you’re saying now.”

Research suggests that happy couples don’t necessarily argue less. They make more repair attempts, and their partners accept them.

Not Just for Romantic Relationships

These strategies work just as well with parents, siblings, friends, and colleagues. We tend to be most careless with the people closest to us. We’re polite to strangers and then pour all our frustration onto the people at home.

A Quick Test

Today or tomorrow, the next time you feel friction with someone, ask yourself three questions:

1. Am I calm right now?

2. Am I attacking, or sharing a feeling?

3. Do I want to solve this, or just win?

These three questions can stop many fights before they start.

Nobody reaches the end of life saying, “I wish I’d won that argument.” Many say, “I wish I’d said sorry sooner.”

Think of the person whose message you left unanswered tonight, the one you’re still holding a grudge against. Send them a short note. No long explanation needed. Just write: “I was thinking about it. You mean more to me than being right.”

Because relationships don’t break in one big fight. They break under the weight of countless unsaid “sorrys” and unheard “I’m here”s. And they mend with one small, brave “Let’s talk again.”

It’s midnight.
