The stage lights at the World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur went quiet for a second before the judges called out the champion’s name. Among a hall packed with over a thousand people, one young man stood alone \u2014 Bangladesh’s only representative, with no institutional backing, no organization’s banner behind him. Just an idea, and the nerve to see it through.<\/p>\n

That’s Iftekhar Safin, a student from Jahangirnagar University.<\/p>\n

On September 23, 2026, he won the Student Biz Innov Challenge, the grand finale event held as part of the University Research & Innovation Investment Summit (URIIS) 2026 in Malaysia. Organized under the oversight of Malaysia’s Ministry of Higher Education and Department of Higher Education, the summit brought together more than 20 public and private universities and over a thousand participants \u2014 researchers, entrepreneurs, investors, industry leaders, and policymakers, all under one roof.<\/p>\n

Out of that massive pool, Safin made it through multiple rounds of selection to become one of the top three Asian finalists, earning fully funded participation in the final stage. He then stood on that stage alone and pitched his project live \u2014 and walked away with the title.<\/p>\n

What won it for him<\/strong><\/h2>\n

His project, “SkillBridge ISA,” tackles a problem that’s practically universal: the widening gap between what traditional education teaches and what the job market actually demands, along with the financial barriers that keep many students from accessing quality, industry-ready training.<\/p>\n

The core idea is simple but the thinking behind it runs deep \u2014 students pay nothing upfront. Corporate partners fund the training based on their workforce needs, students learn the skills, get hired, and then repay the cost gradually through manageable installments tied to their post-employment income. Learn first, then earn, then repay in proportion to that income \u2014 a three-step cycle. And crucially, it’s designed to work alongside existing educational institutions, meaning it can scale affordably without requiring expensive new infrastructure.<\/p>\n

A problem spotted through the eyes of one student \u2014 but one that reflects the reality of millions of young people.<\/p>\n

Why this story matters<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Every year, countless talented young Bangladeshis look for opportunities on the international stage, but most face the same walls: lack of institutional support, limited access to information, or financial constraints. Safin’s story stands apart precisely because of that \u2014 he showed that with the right idea and enough courage, it’s possible to compete on a global stage, entirely on your own.<\/p>\n

A nation’s story is never written only through its big institutions or policies \u2014 it’s written through the hands of young people who dare to turn the problems around them into solutions.
