Your university friends are getting promoted one by one, someone’s moving abroad, and someone else’s LinkedIn shows a new job title every other month. And there you are, staring at your own pace, wondering \u2014 am I falling behind?<\/p>\n

Sound familiar? Almost everyone hits a point in life where it feels like everyone else is running and you’re just walking. But the real problem isn’t the pace \u2014 it’s the comparison. We treat our careers like a 100-meter sprint, where whoever gets there first wins. In reality, it’s a marathon \u2014 and in a marathon, nobody remembers who was ahead at the first kilometer.<\/p>\n

The illusion of fast success<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Social media only shows us the highlights \u2014 the promotion post, the new office photo, the award ceremony. Nobody posts about the failed interview, the rejected application, or the months of feeling stuck. A Harvard Business School study found that a large share of people who achieve “fast success” in the first decade of their career later struggle with burnout or a loss of direction \u2014 because they reach the heights before they’ve built the depth to sustain them.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, those who build skills slowly, learn from mistakes, and strengthen their foundation are the ones who last in the long run and eventually reach leadership positions.<\/p>\n

Grit and the long-term mindset<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Psychologist Angela Duckworth’s well-known research shows that the biggest predictor of long-term success isn’t talent \u2014 it’s “grit,” a sustained passion and perseverance toward a goal. The people who move forward a little each day, and start again after stopping, are the ones who end up ahead. Talent makes the start easier, but perseverance is what gets you to the destination.<\/p>\n

A pause isn’t a failure<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Marathon runners know that stopping for water, slowing down, even hitting a wall of fatigue \u2014 these are all part of the race, not a defeat. It’s the same with a career. A gap year, quitting a job, or taking time for yourself doesn’t set you back \u2014 it prepares you for the next stretch.<\/p>\n

Run your own race<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Your colleague’s pace was never meant to be your benchmark. Everyone’s journey starts on a different road, with different obstacles. Someone’s path is flat; someone else’s is full of hills. Comparing just adds exhaustion, not direction.<\/p>\n

So next time it feels like everyone else is pulling ahead, remind yourself \u2014 this isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon. Consistency, not speed, is the real strength.
